General Information

• Camps taught by DRIVEN Robotics.

• Students will build robots using LEGO Mindstorms NXT (provided for camp use).

• Camps will be held at Bethany Collegiate Church, 5 North Concord Avenue, Havertown, PA. (Click here for map)

• Fee: $125 per child per session ($25 of which is non-refundable).

• Each session will need a minimum of 18 students. Classes are limited to 30 students. Students will be accepted on a first-paid, first-served basis.

• Snacks will be served.

The camps are very team based. Each student will be in a group with two or three other students close to their own age to maximize their learning experience. Each group will work as a team to build and program an autonomous robot under the guidance of a high school aged mentor. There will also be instructional periods in which the students will learn basic principals of robotics in a larger group.

Beginner Robotics Camp

• Ages 8-13 (No prior robotics or programming experience necessary)

• Date: July 28th — August 1st, 2008.

• Times: Morning (8:30am - 11:30am) and afternoon (1:30pm - 4:30pm) sessions available.

Students will build a pre-designed driving base, but will be encouraged to add on to and make changes to this driving base. Students will design and program their robot to perform challenges similar to the FLL challenges. The teams will come up with their own solutions to the challenges with the guidance of their mentor. Among other things, the students will learn how to use gears, motors, sensors (light, touch, and rotation), as well as to write computer programs needed to make the robots run autonomously.

Intermediate Robotics Camp

•  Ages 8-14 (Prerequisite: Beginner Robotics Camp)

•  Date: August 11th — 15th, 2008.

•  Times: 8:30am - 11:30am

This level builds upon the skills taught in the Beginner Camp. In this level, students will learn to build more sophisticated robots. Students will work with various robot driving base designs. They will learn: 1) to build functional mechanisms using motors and advanced gears, 2) to use sensors in more complex applications (e.g., line-following), and 3) to write more advanced programs. Students will design and program their robot to perform challenges similar to the FLL challenges. Robot "success" will be measured by consistent/reliable completion of challenges.

Customized Camps

Can't make the dates or times listed? Want a robotics camp for your own group of students - boy/girl scouts, FLL team, LEGO club, etc.? Or maybe just need a one-time introduction to robotics or engineering? Email campinfo@drivenrobotics.com and we may be able to run a customized robotics camp for you. You will need to provide at least 6 students, a location, and adult supervision. Fee and other details for customized camps depend on your request.

About Driven Robotics

DRIVEN Robotics is a high-school robotics program sponsored by Science Resources. Driven currently fields two teams which have competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge for the last three years. In addition to FIRST VEX, many members of Driven have graduated from FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams, and some are currently mentors. In all, the summer camp staff have a combined 40 seasons of FLL experience, participating in an FLL program that won 29 awards, 7 tournaments, and attended five international championships in seven years.
